Nasal sedation
This is sometimes called transmucosal sedation. The effects are similar to oral sedation. It is very effective for patients with needle phobia and for children.
About nasal sedation
- The drug is delivered by a special atomiser into your nostril.
- It can taste a little bitter.
- It acts quickly within about 10 minutes.
- It is a very gentle and comfortable form of sedation.
What to expect
- You will feel sleepy and relaxed.
- Your memory will not be affected before the drug was given but you may forget parts of the procedure.
- You are likely to have a sense of well-being.
- You will need to stay in the practice until the dental surgeon is satisfied you are safe to be accompanied home by a responsible adult.
What not to expect
- Nasal sedation does not produce general anaesthesia.
- You will not have oblivion. In other words it is not totally without sensation like an anaesthetic for open heart surgery!
